[NEWS/INFO] Spread Leg Dance: Signature move + Petition

4Minute's fans and netizens put on a campaign in favor of their unique and eye-catching
spread leg dance routine.

On April 12th,netizens created a petition online via Daum's Agora portal to make Korean's big three broadcasting channels reconsider the ban they put on 4Minute's spread leg moves.

Netizens's goal to reach for the petition is 3000 signatures by May 31 and they reached
(68 signatures when the article was posted ) 123 signatures at the moment .

The petition is garnering great interest as many netizens have been tired of broadcasting channels ban.

They declared :
QUOTE
"Why in the world is the spread leg dance banned when we allow artists to spread their
arms to a wider angle? What is the reason behind that?"

They even went as far as to calculate the moves angles.

QUOTE
"As you can see in these pictures : The movements are captured perfectly to show how the spread leg
dance routine and the spread arm moves are similar in essence. As both moves need
to be executed perfectly to a wide angle:

Spread arm move: 90° angle Spread leg move : 82° angle

When you try to analyze the moves you would be able to see that there is a 82° angle in each leg, which
means that the spread leg move when executed got a 164° angle.

On the other hand, the spread arm move when executed got a 90° angle per arm.Which means that
when you add both sides, you end up with a 180° angle. You can therefore see that the spread arm move is wider than the spread leg move.
"

They also expressed their anger and disappointement over KBS' decision of banning performances which
they see as an infringement to their freedom of watching their favorite artists perform after such a long time.

They commented :
QUOTE
"4Minute's spread leg dance routine is the highlight of the choreography.I wonder how
did KBS come with that kind of reasoning as to go so far as to ban the choreography. How can that be?This
violates our viewers right to watch what we want when we want!"

Netizens also stated that it was unfair to the viewers that broadcasting channels and KBS in particular
choose to ban these moves using younger audiences as an excuse:
QUOTE

"To younger audiences, the spread leg move won't be as any different as the spread arm move, they
came up with an easy excuse to put an end to the polemics without considering us viewers in the first place."

Meanwhile,4Minute has been sweeping music charts with their latest singles "Mirror Mirror" and "Heart To Heart" which have been topping the charts. They also managed to be tough competitors to idol group Big Bang and even surpassed them on music charts.

They introduced the now popular "Spread Leg Dance" and received a hot response from netizens with their charismatic performances.

They dance routine was tagged as "scandalous" by netizens who were amazed by 4Minute's ability to show off multiple facets of themselves through their releases.

[INT] 4minute's interview with Kuki News

[11.04.14] 4minute's interview with Kuki News

Girl group 4minute has come back. For the past year, they have been fulfilling overseas activities and now they're coming back with more refined works.

This comeback has its other sense. It is because the 2-year-old music group 4minute brought in their first full-length album and, thus, came back. Even though, in the past, full-length albums were deservedly released, lately, according to the recent trend to release music as fast as possible, releasing a full-length album is, indeed, a challenge. Nevertheless, for singers, a full-length album means it's their very own album.

A member stated "I think we were very joyful. We worked hard in order that we could take part, not only in the recording of the songs that this album features, but also in the lyrics composition, the choreography, the style concept, and the making of the jacket cover. When our finished album came out, we thought that we reaped the fruits of our efforts. Therefore, while we were preparing this album, we were engaged in the workings with the mindset of a rookie."

As soon as they released their 2 title tracks 'Heart to Heart' and 'Mirror, Mirror', 4minute was hit with a controversy. Because of their 'spread legs dance'. Regarding this, the general audience's response was mixed. Some claimed that it was too much since there was an underage member in the group but many also argued that the standards for dramas and variety programs shouldn't be so strict. In a week, they changed their dance routine.

One member revealed "We don't think of it as a controversy. We thought of the great interest we were given. We had been focusing on our promotion activities abroad so our domestic activities were insignificant and the fans told us that they expected a lot. We think of the good observations and the pieces of advice. When we were to change our dance routine, people kept asking us not to change it. We missed even more the dance routine we have been preparing and practicing for 3 months and, because the changed dance routine that we prepared in a short amount of time seemed unsatisfactory, we thought that we won't be able to show a more polished image of ourselves."

Their comeback happens after a year but they didn't rest in the meantime. Because there have been many girl groups. When one used to say "Even if I know the name of the group, it's difficult to learn the members' names", now one says "It's hard to learn the name of the groups as well". Just for the first half of the year, 20 groups have debuted or made their comeback, in total. Still, when we asked 4minute - one of the leading groups - if it was favorable to them, they shook their head.

One member answered "The path that is ahead of us is long. There are people that still don't know who we are. We have to improve a little more so they could really know us. During the preparations of our album, we assumed the mindset of a rookie group, because we had to go further. We're a group that will soon hit its 2-year anniversary but when we only consider the number of months, there have only been 9 months of promotion activities. Moreover, the girl groups that are currently debuting are all doing good. That's why we can't help but think we have to work harder."

The oldest member, Nam Jihyun, started an acting career during the group's hiatus. She debuted through the drama 'It's Okay, Daddy's Girl'. The 4minute member's first acting performance received good responses. In addition, she has also drawn interest at another time : she was even accused of plastic surgery because of a picture released at the time of their comeback.

She revealed "The funny thing is that many people didn't know that I was a singer, even the seniors. I had to tell the director that I was a singer. So, while I was filming for the drama, I thought that I'd have to let more people know more about 4minute. Regarding the accusations of plastic surgery, I was surprised as well. The day that picture was revealed, starting from the morning, friends called me and asked me about it. At the university, the way people looked at me was different. However, I didn't do any plastic surgery and this anecdote wasn't much a bitter story, so it's all right."

During their hiatus in Korea, 4minute rode a wave of popularity abroad. Their promotion activities have been expanded to Japan and various Southeast Asian countries. Like other Hallyu artists, they're enjoying a rise in popularity on Youtube.

A member said "We fulfilled promotion activities in Japan and received one award at the Japan Billboard Awards ceremony. Thanks to our promotion activities, we've particularly gained stage experience. Even if we mess up, we don't get embarrassed. On Youtube, we managed to get the honor of the most watched Korean artist. Foreign fans are watching over us a lot. On the contrary, the Korean fans asked us why we weren't doing domestic promotion activities. So, we are to work hard for the promotion activities for this album."

During their debut days, the public's interest focused on the former Wonder Girls member Hyunah. However, now, time has flied fast, each member has carried out activities on TV shows and such and they have experienced a rise in popularity as well. How has the fans' concern changed?

"Hyunah is still the most popular member. But it's mainly because she was active before she became a 4minute member. Nevertheless, the thing that has changed is that each member's fanbase has grown. We can assert it by watching the replies on twitter or on the fansites. However, I wish that, instead of each member's popularity, 4minute's popularity will go higher." (Jiyoon)

The album they have made neatly and progressively isn't trivial. It is their first full-length album. Now, they talk about achieving the dream of holding a solo concert in Korea. But, of course, holding a concert for an idol group is quite a business.

One member expressed her thoughts on the matter "Expectations are high. On one hand, holding a concert in Korea doesn't seem easy. It seems that not that many people go see a concert held by an idol group. I don't think that people would enjoy all the songs on an idol group's album. On the other hand, because we included a lot of refined songs in this album, We'd be glad to hold a concert if we get the opportunity. We have to receive a lot of love for this to happen."

[11.04.16] 4minute's interview with STARNEWS

The 5-member girl group 4minute exposed their determination through their amusing whines.

4minute - consisting of Nam Jihyun, Jeon Jiyoon, Heo Gayoon, Kim Hyunah and Kwon Sohyun - released their first full-length album earlier this month, just 2 years after their debut in June 2009 with 'Hot Issue'. Their two title tracks 'Mirror, Mirror' and 'Heart to Heart' are two of the most popular songs at the moment.

In a recent interview with STARNEWS, 4minute talked about their first full-length album and shared stories about the 6-member popular idol group BEAST and the solo singer G.NA, also under CUBE Entertainment.

4minute's Heo Gayoon said laughingly "We're close to BEAST, we consider them as older cousins" and "Now, we really look like a family."

A member stated "We're the first CUBE group that got the chance to debut, so, accordingly, our CEO's and the company staff's love and interest were, partly, only for us" then laughingly revealed "However, after us, BEAST and G.NA debuted. After the fans, the CEO and the company employees also shared their concern between us. Haha"

Heo Gayoon exposed the close friendship 4minute has with BEAST and G.NA "Of course, the company employees are still giving us lots of affection, but we're going to strive hard in the upcoming times, so we can gain back the interest we used to receive before". She went on "The truth is that we didn't stop saying that we're proud of BEAST and G.Na and that we consider them awesome because of that".

Kwon Sohyun smiled while se said "We really like BEAST oppa and G.Na unni" and "It's thank to BEAST and G.NA that I'm even prouder to be part of CUBE Entertainment".

She then added "This year, we'll have many domestic promotion activities, so BEAST and G.Na unni can also consider us an awesome group."

[11.04.15] 4minute's interview with OSEN

The popular girl group 4minute made their comeback with their first full-length album '4minutes Left' that marked a reinforcement of their femininity and they are also earning the support of male fans. Since their debut, it's the first time they wore skirts and sang about love; 4minute wore big smiles as they said "Women have to look pretty after all."

"The truth is that we don't have a lot of male fans. because we sported a military concept and sang about finding one's confidence, the female fans' response has always been greater. This time, we're wearing skirts. Our make-up is also tenderer. During the week of our comeback, we noticed the male fans a lot. People who took a break in their army service even came to our fan signings. Women have to look pretty after all. (laughs)" (Hyunah)

In this album, they come off more feminine and friendlier. 4minute has established itself as a strong girl group and their polished performances as well as their powerful songs became their distinctive trademark, but in this album, they intended to show 4minute's charms to more people.

"We have the confidence to say that we're a group that shows music. We also have a good competitive spirit when it comes to display various things on stage. During the one-year gap that has passed, we monitored the fans' opinions a lot. Because a lot of them said they wanted us to have songs that are easy to listen to and that they also wanted us to have a friendlier image, we picked the path that could meet their demands without ditching our color. We also wanted to hear that we're pretty." (Kwon Sohyun)

Since last year, 4minute has been focusing on their promotion activities in Japan and thus picked the same path as other girl groups. Rather than a Korean group, 4minute appeals as artists that rely on the quality of their performances. Compared to other groups, their impact has been less strong, but they're steadily getting more clout.

"There have been times we were depressed as well. When we thought about dancing in a cute way. But I think it wasn't that worrisome. While other groups regularly became greatly discussed topics, we got to appeal with another color. I think it's great." (Hyunah)

Now, 4minute has become the topic of discussions like a 'Hot Issue' at last. Because they had to change a part of their dance routine for 'Mirror, Mirror', that was deemed racy and that brought up a controversy.

"We had 6 versions for the modified dance routine. Everyday, in training suits, we went to the practice room and worked even harder during practice sessions than we did for our debut. We watched a lot of foreign artists' performances and, during the 2 months we spent on practicing the choreography, we didn't think it could be controversial." (Nam Jihyun)

4minute changed that part of their choreography and are carrying on their promotion activities. Even if they're okay with the fact they changed their choreography, they dreaded they might lose the public's interest in their performances.

"We changed our dance routine, but please show us affection and be considerate. We will work hard." (Jeon Jiyoon)

[NEWS] 4Minute's Kim HyunA's warm heart becomes a hot topic

Several Idol groups, including 4Minute, attended yesterday's KBS Special event aiming to give hope for children. 4Minute's Kim HyunA caught people's interest as her photos wrapping her hands on the children in front of her was revealed. The children who attended the Love Sharing Concert were shivering that night because of the low temperature. With just their T-shirts on, the kids felt stiff and uneasy.

However, Kim HyunA immediately noticed it and came closer to the children to wrap her hands around them to keep them warm.

Meanwhile, aside from 4Minute, TVXQ, Girls Day, SG Wannabe, Kim Taewoo and more artists participated on the concert with "Hope for the Children" as its theme.

[INT] 4Minute: Thought of becoming trainees again to prepare for their 1st Full Album

4Minute has just officially returned: more feminine and more matured. "This change has been well-thought of and in fact, we all worked hard in order to develop," one explained.

4Minute has been in the music industry for almost 3 years already. They debuted last June 18, 2009. When they released their first Mini-album, the girls started to hit their marks on people's mind; however, spectacular growth and development has been more evident from them when they finally released their first ever Full Korean Album entitled, 4MINUTES LEFT. It's been almost a year now since their last release in Korea and in order to make up to the spaces they missed, they decided to make an effective and ambitious step, also to finally reach their goals.

"For the first full-length album, lyrics had been taken good care by each member."

The youngest member revealed, "While in the midst of our preparation for the album, we'd always think that everything's not yet enough. We paid attention to the very little details - the words, facial expressions, make-up, performance, so right now, I'm very proud of what it has become. Many people liked it and I recommend everyone to carefully listen and understand the lyrics of the songs."

She added with confidence, "On this album, the songs have strong beats and has a sophisticated allurement to it. I also tried to show more of my feminine side to it in order to show more of my different image to everyone."

Members Kwon Sohyun and Jeon Jiyoon enthusiastically participated on composing the raps of the title tracks of the full album.

For the main title-track, "Mirror Mirror", Kwon Sohyun helped on writing its rap parts. She shyly said, "I practiced for it little by little. Shinsadong-oppa helped us directly. We do recorded several times, but through their assistance and praises, I've been encouraged to do better. I believe that it was a marvelous and a good experience."

This burning passion of the girls can be seen as the girls did their best to achieve the ideal body. The members, especially, HyunA's eyes are usually focused to beef. "Our attitude felt like we returned to becoming trainees again. We'll eat our dinner together at 10:00 in the evening and by 6:00 AM, we'll go start practicing. This is our first full-length album and I think, we really have to work this hard," HyunA answered.

"The "spread-leg" dance controversy gave us a scary and embarrassing thought."

In the last 9 days, 4Minute has been busy for their Comeback stages, including their performance at MBC's Music Core, as part of their promotions for their 4MINUTES LEFT album. They performed their title tracks: "Mirror Mirror" and "Heart to Heart." The reaction for their performances has become very explosive. After sweeping the music charts, their repetitive and intense lyrics as well as their dance choreography garnered so much interest from the audience. However, an unexpected issue came in when their dance for "Mirror Mirror" became controversial for its sexuality. The members were all surprised upon knowing this and somehow, made them feel embarrassed.

The leader, Nam Jihyun, expressed her feelings and said, "At first, I was really embarrassed about it. We actually prepared and practiced hard for the dance movements to give everyone a new look and style. This issue, most especially, the "spread-leg" dance, was really unexpected. We believe that it's just one of the important parts of our performance that should be looked forward for."

Their agency officials has just made certain modifications for the last 12 days on 4Minute's controversial choreography.

"We'll focus first with our domestic promotions and activities, then International activities would follow."

Last year, 4Minute obviously focused more on their international activities. Their activities, especially in Japan, gave them various opportunities to achieve global expansion and make their dreams possible. In Japan, they successfully had two-sold-out concerts in just 10 minutes, marking a record for the group.

Also, last February, 4Minute was chosen by Japan's Billboard Music Awards to receive the "KPOP New-Artist Award."

However, for local fans, the long-year of waiting is over.

The youngest, Kwon Sohyun, said, "We'll focus more with our domestic promotional activities. We'll just probably be back with our international activities once we're done with our promotions locally."

HyunA added, "The album has just been released for less than a week. Our follow-up promotions is now being planned so expect us to really work hard. We'll continue to answer our fans' high expectations. All I can say is that, expect something different."

[NEWS] 4Minute's answer to the sensational controversy: A new choreography

Last April 5, 4Minute has just revealed the MV of "Mirror Mirror" to the public promising their fans to resume with their domestic activities with a full-length album and a new title track for it. However, the "spread-leg" dance on its choreography has become a sensational controversy that engulfed the media and the general public. Thus, on yesterday's KBS' "Sharing Cultural Festival," the girls attracted the audience with their modified choreography.
Last April 14, KBS, revealed the new choreography for "Mirror Mirror" that 4Minute prepared in answer to the issues that continues to spark all over the news.

[NEWS] 4Minute has no complaints on modifying their "Mirror Mirror" dance

When OSEN asked 4Minute with regards to their feelings about changing some parts of their choreography for 'Mirror Mirror,' the group immediately said, "I guess, it has become a problem because the emphasis of our dance isn't really that part. The "mirror dance" should have had been the highlight but it has been overlapped with that part. Modifying that part of our dance won't give a big change to our overall performance so overall, we don't have any complaints about it."

The hot debates caused the girls to feel very embarrassed. "For foreign artists, our performance and choreography would not be seen as 'too sensitive' at all so we really never imagined this kind of reaction. We practiced a lot over the last two months in preparation of our Live performances and we never thought that such controversy will spark," the members explained.

"The photos that have been captured and posted in the internet were put into slow-motion. The moment I saw it, I felt shy and a little surprised," one member honestly revealed.

Meanwhile, 4Minute revealed their first version of the modified choreography for the bridge part of the song 'Mirror Mirror' on MNET in replacement of their "spread-leg" dance movement.

[INT] 4minute's interview with STARNEWS

[11.04.14] 4minute's interview with STARNEWS

The 5-member girl group 4minute made an energetic first step for their second leap.

4minute - consisting of Kim Hyunah, Heo Gayoon, Jeon Jiyoon, Nam Jihyun and Kwon Sohyun - released their first full-length album earlier this month, with the dance songs 'Mirror, Mirror' and 'Heart to Heart' as its title tracks. It's their first album released after 2 years since their strong debut in June 2009 with 'Hot Issue'.

Even if, lately, in the Kpop scene, digital singles and mini albums are released more often, releasing a full-length album is still one of the biggest dreams to achieve for a singer. Because they can express their own music abilities and charms to their heart's content.

Because this first full-length album has also its importance to the already popular girl group 4minute, it is likely to mean another start.

"Because we dropped our first album, it feels great. I like the fact that we prepared enough content to hold our first solo concert in Korea. We've been accumulating songs. Haha" (Heo Gayoon)

"After our first album dropped, the feeling of responsibility was stronger. I came to think that we should work more and better our skills even more. Of course, I have no words to express my joy." (Jeon Jiyoon)

"This album is an album that many staffers made and are attached to. They tried various music genres and made them so they all could be title tracks. It is not because it's our album but, I have the confidence to say that it's an album smeared with the lively feel of spring. I think that we did work on this album and that all the members have upgraded their skills even more." (Kim Hyunah)

Actually, 4minute have worked on this album for about a year in a singular manner. They haven't released anything in Korea after the release of their mini album last May and its title track 'HUH': this is the reason why they can't help but be strongly attached to this album.

But clouds always follow the sunshine. They released their first full-length album and did things properly for their performances but they sparked a controversy by themselves. The part of their dance routine when they're kneeling earned the "spread legs dance" and a controversy aroused for its racy aspect. They eventually changed it.

The dance routine for which they sweated so much got them caught in a controversy, and it could have eventually hurt the 4minute members who are still young. Nonetheless, they were brave.

The youngest member Kwon Sohyun said "At first, when the 'spread legs dance' controversy sparked, we didn't even know there was a controversy surrounding us" and "Because while we have been practicing the dance routine for 'Mirror, Mirror' for a long time, we didn't think it could be suggestive, not even once". She added while smiling "It's a pity that a controversy aroused over a choreography that we have practiced for a long time. Please look forward to our new changed choreography"

Nam Jihyun revealed "I thought I should be thankful and consider the interest coming from this controversy, whatever it is" and "In the upcoming times, we'll work hard on our promotion activities with our modified dance routine."

Kim Hyunah said laughingly "Even though we're embarrassed, it was even more surprising that we earned such great interest for our dance routine" and "Even though many wanted us to changed the choreography and said it was disturbing, we will be able to try something new and I like it."

4minute's such confidence comes from their trust in one another. Now, they just have to look at one another's expression in the eyes to understand their feelings. Their tight teamwork results in a synergy effect on stage.

Jeon Jiyoon confidently stated "Our very own forte is a distinctive color" and "I think we can pull of the 'powerful' the best". She then added "One of our other strong points is our teamwork" and "I think that we will be able to last longer than Shinhwa."

Kim Hyunah said laughingly "Our teamwork is our greatest virtue" and "Now we can read each other's feelings, and it's thanks to this that we're improving a lot more".

As expected, Nam Jihyun said "4minute's looks are definitely not the best, but when it comes to our teamwork, our personality as a group, our performances and more, we think they're the best and we're striving to make it even truer". "We're not 1+1+1+1+1=5 but 100; it is because our teamwork is different" she concluded laughingly.

The 4minute girls who trust each other and also are considerate to one another, let's look forward to their second start.

4minute's two title tracks are both earning a hot response and ranking high on online music charts.

In the afternoon of April 13th, 'Mirror, Mirror' and 'Heart to Heart' both safely remained within the top 5 on Mnet, Dosirak and more. Both tracks were seen in the top 10 of Melon and Bugs, which shows they're staying strong on the charts.

4minute, who released 'Heart to Heart' and then 'Mirror, Mirror', was first seen struggling on online music charts. It is thanks to their comeback stages that they skyrocketed up and swept the charts.

They captivated music fans through their fancy performances and stage mannerism for their comeback stages.

If 'Heart to Heart' captivated the general audience in an instant and marked the expansion of 4minute's range of music genres with its cheerful melody, their "shadow title track" 'Mirror, Mirror' is a song that bears a distinctive concept and that displays an ever better upgrade of the charismatic 4minute's representative color.

[11.04.13] 4minute's interview with STARNEWS

For the first time, the 5-member girl group 4minute talked about the controversy over the dance routine for their new hot song 'Mirror, Mirror' and the decision to change it.

In the afternoon of April 13th, the 5 members of 4minute (Kim Hyunah, Jeon Jiyoon, Heo Gayoon, Nam Jihyun and Kwon Sohyun) had an interview with STARNEWS about their first full-length album released earlier this month.

On this occasion, the members expressed their opinions on the controversy surrounding a part of their dance routine for 'Mirror, Mirror' that was deemed racy and that is still being vexed on online portals. This is the first time the members have stated their opinions.

Our new changed choreography is prominent as well"

Jeon Jiyoon revealed "We earned interest from the controversy, I think that it's better that unresponsiveness" and "I try to view this controversy in a positive light. We'll get to show another type of performances again and it's great."

Heo Gayoon "Our new album came out after a year-long hiatus and it seems we received a lot of interest for various aspects, so I tend to think that this controversy is just one facet of this interest" and "Amidst this controversy, our fans empowered us so we gained strength."

Meanwhile, since their latest consecutive appearances on the 3 Korean major broadcasting channels, 4minute has been bogged down in a controversy over a part of their dance routine for 'Mirror, Mirror' that was deemed sexy and shocking. On stage, the members wore short hot pants and spread their legs while on their knees. The netizens called that part the "spread legs dance" and brought up the controversy.

[NEWS] DJ DOC -> BoA -> 4Minute: Evolution of the scandalous "Spread-leg Dance

DJ DOC had already been a 'Hot Issue' on the year 2000 when they released their song "Run To You" with a repeated line on its bridge saying, "Bounce, Bounce, Bounce," while the rest of their female back up-dancers perform an up-and-down leg movement, spreading their legs, revealing a scandalous appearance to the audience that eventually caused a stir from the public.

This continued to become a hotter topic for the outfits used by their back-up dancers; particularly, the pair of fitted pants and the controversial pair of fishnet stockings they used. The public, most especially, the women, questioned this in concern of its degree of sexuality for the audience and asked: "Do they really need to do that when they perform the dance?"

Despite of receiving so many negative comments and debates, the song still received so much love that it even made it on the top of numerous music charts and festivals.

In 2010, a lot of people were surprised as the same kind of issue rose, when the International Korean star, BoA, released her songs, "Hurricane Venus" and "Copy and Paste." A number of reports has been made with regards to her unique pair of stockings as well as the new "leg-movement" that she introduced. "Embarrassing but with sexy facial expressions," described by the Netizens. Though deemed to be "too sexual," the song as well as the dance, still garnered so much interest and support.

Following these controversial hit makers is the 5-membered girl group, 4Minute. For their long-awaited comeback, the group decided to release a double-title track album. One of which is the song entitled "Mirror Mirror" where the girls had to wear a pair of knee pads while dancing their sexy "spread-leg dance." Until now, the group still faces a number of questions and debates with regards to this dance movement they introduced to the public.

On the other hand, a new girl group under the hit songwriter, Brave Brothers, now known as Brave Girls, is being compared to 4Minute for their same sexy appeal while performing in black clothes and dancing their "knee-dance" choreography.

This "sexual and suggestive" concerns in terms of dance choreographies and performances continues to become a big topic for almost 10 years now. Right now, it seems like it's the turn of young female girl groups to make the same issue popular all over again. Moreover, evolution continues, more and more.

[11.04.12] 4minute's interview with Sports Hanguk

■ 4minute, who has released their first full album
Bruises from their fierce dance - Plan to wear kneepads
Confidence in becoming a performance-driven girl group - Growth in their international fanbase

"These are not the kneepads you're thinking of."

If the main character of any drama saw these girls' performance, he would have recited a monologue about it . No matter how many times you see it, kneepads definitely do not match girl groups, but it's a different story with 4minute.

These girls have chosen their spot as "performance" representatives. While wearing their kneepads, they sweep the floor and shake their bodies, making male fans mesmerized. They even started the interview with the topic of their kneepads.

"It was decided the day before our first performance that we would wear kneepads. Before that, we didn't even think of kneepads. It was very foolish," Heo Gayoon said while laughing.

"We were thinking of doing the dance with long pants. We already had many bruises on our knees from practicing. We were so eager to perform well that we didn't have any time to think about the pain," Kwon Sohyun said.

Along with their hit song (which they made a comeback with on the 7th), they've become one of the trendiest group. Their lyrics that repeat the word 'mirror' 78 times and their fierce dance movements display unique charms. The "spread legs dance" is causing a lot of controversy while capturing the interest of fans. The 4minute members did not expect so much attention at all. They may have been bothered by this peculiar attention.

"It's sexy. It's not a cute dance. (laughs) I was so lost in the performance at first that I was confused why people were making such a fuss," Kim Hyunah said.

"I think female fans feel vicarious gratification when they watch our confident and fierce appearance. It strengthens them. And it feels like we have male fans now thanks to this song. We do this because we like it, right?" Jeon Jiyoon laughs.

4minute, who released , , , , the Japanese single and more, doesn't have any rivals when it comes to performances. They have toured Japan and other parts of Asia and their fandom has grown. Their popularity overseas can be measured : on their Youtube, 4minute's music videos have received more than 20 millions views. They have developed the confidence to carry out activities anywhere in Asia and have now returned in Korea. Through the promotion activities they had conducted for a long time, their teamwork tightened and became more disciplined.

"We had 2 concert tours in Japan. Every time a single came out, our ranks on music charts were higher than the previous times. When we saw that the number of fans who really liked our strong music increased, we realized the meaning of the saying that there isn't any boundary when it comes to music." Kim Hyunah

If there are things that they have gained, there are things they have lost. They neglected their domestic promotion activities. During that one-year gap, the members went back to the trainee lifestyle and adopted the mindset that they were to debut again. Their eagerness filtered through Gayoon's words "Going back to the basics felt like it was a new start".

The time of the flowing in of girl groups in their 20s has arrived. Junior groups that rely on the quality of their performances like 4minute have appeared. The members revealed that they observed the junior groups that came out, their strong impact and they felt an odd competitive spirit. They revealed "We ended eating healthy foods only". The members prepared themselves to be engaged in a showdown of more powerful and dareful performances.

Jeon Jiyoon said "As more and more girl groups that focus on their performances keep coming in, we just think that we can't give way here. In a way, it's flattering. We've become role models. Even if there are many groups similar to ours, we want to make a stand in the game with our very own performances". As for Nam Jihyun, she said "Before the start of our promotion activities, we worried a lot about if we could do well for these performances. Whenever we pull it off, we feel alive. We foolishly persevere with difficult and meticulous performances. This is who we are."

[NEWS] Jeon Jiyoon received an IV treatment due to her health condition

4minute, who made their comeback on April 7th, attended all the music shows of the week-end and met their fans.
