Seo Sukwon's album review

There is a 1980s film titled starring Demi Moore and Rob Lowe. This movie is about the title itself as it portrays the quick, but warming love of growing teenagers. Any movie you watch displaying the love of young adults, whether is romance or horror, most of time, it takes place with the summer night as the background.

This could be because of the fact that a lot of idle activities takes place in the summer, added with the bonus of the "chemical reaction" that takes place a lot in the night. Whatever the reason may be, the nights at the famous beaches in Korea are filled with accidents involving the "mating" process that is portrayed through many teenage movies.

However, an album that you can enjoy listening to without any pressure on a long hot summer night has been released. I'm talking about the mini album from the male idol group BEAST.

This is BEAST's 5th mini album and has a total of 6 different tracks. From dance songs with refreshing beats, to emotional ballads, and even sensible R&B, you can find all these tracks on the album. In addition, the album is filled with tracks that men and women from all different age groups can enjoy even if you aren't exactly a fan of them.

The refreshing feeling of a song and emotion packed lyrics meet.

The song 'Midnight' is a song portraying a guy missing his girlfriend who he loved through the thick and thin. The lyrics "You found me faster than the time I take to blink / The love that left me" and "But I must have really liked you" expresses the regrets in the relationship while the line, "Continuously muted and slowly forgotten" expresses unavoidable resignation.

The combination of a refreshing electronic beat and heart touching melody is really excellent. The song starts off and ends with the sweet melody mixed emotional vocals during the "Nananan nananan" parts. That part in particular blends very well with the guitar sounds in the background creating a romantic atmosphere. In addition, the song makes very good use of the "ah"s to give off a more relatable charms to the listener.

Yoon Doojoon's emotional vocals in the bridge of the song, "The night I count the stars, the night that slowly transforms because of the changing seasons / However, this night is still the night I still can't seem to fall asleep" is good as well. It's a good song to listen to sitting on a silent beach on a summer night

The song 'It's a Beautiful Night" portrays a man's determination to attract a girl who he fell in love with at first sight. The man has just opened his eyes to love so he doesn't know what love is like. He can't control his love emotions like the lyrics in the song and you can feel the excitement the speaker has as if he is walking on clouds.

The mid-tone electronic sounds in the beginning resembles the speaker's heart heating up and then refreshing vocal tones that come in helps to subdue the the temperature from rising in the song. The reckless hot blood of a male in his 20s is well displayed in the song and it is also a song you can directly feel BEAST's manliness.

The song 'Not Me' is about guy lying to his girlfriend who accuses him for cheating. The speaker of the song says "It's not me, really not me" and "I can't lie, you already know that" to strongly deny the fact and explains to his girlfriend, "I don't have any other girl" and "So you probably saw the wrong person last night" trying to leave the situation. But isn't there a saying that being strongly negative is the same as being strongly positive? The fact that the speaker is lying to his girlfriend shows up in Yong Junhyung's rap bridge.

The strange sounds hidden in the song resembles the similar doleful sounds found in Sistar's 'Alone', but in BEAST's song this feeling stays with the listener over the first half. This doleful emotion in the song can be triggered by the fact that men can't suppress their "natural" instincts to look at other woman or the fact that he was caught by his girl friend in the act as the lyrics "Even if I fall back, I'll hurt my nose" expresses. In a way, the speaker's lies sound cute, but this can be because of his unorganized meaningless explanations when you can clearly tell he had cheated.

The song 'When I Miss You' is a ballad song portraying a guy missing his old girlfriend. The lyrics expresses the situation of the speaker finding out how his ex girlfriend is doing and is unable to sleep that night because he is remembering the memories they made together. The beautiful melody found in sweet dreams and the emotional vocals help the song stand out, while the romantic guitar sounds fill the beginning and bridge of the song.

Love doesn't last forever?…. Holding the memories of love

When you listen to this song (When I Miss You), you realize that love is like everything else in the world. It doesn't last forever. When you look at the memories the speaker in the song has or even how the speaker wants happiness for his ex girlfriend, you can't find the reason why they broke up. In situations like this you can say that love doesn't change, but people do, but this is what I think. Everlasting love exists, but not every love is everlasting love. Anyways, when I listen to this song I found my heart warming up and I think it will be a good listen on a night with an clear mind.

'The Day You Rest' is a song expressing a man's desire to possess his girlfriend. The speaker in the song can't trust his girlfriend to the point that he doesn't want her to have a day to herself. He is filled with the worry that she might meet eyes with someone who she runs into. He says things like "Because you are so beautiful" and "I can't focus on any of (m) work", but the truth is that he isn't worrying about her, but himself.

The man's lack of self confidence in the lyrics, "I don't know why but I'm nervous for no reason it's making me frustrated," "I wish that you were busy instead," and "I want to carry you like a Cellphone" adds the fun to the song. In the rhythmical sound and even the vocal styles, the "funky" beat presence is strong. The brass sound made by the electronic sound brings attention to the chorus. As a song carrying a lot of strong beats in the beginning, it's a song you can see a new style of BEAST.

'Dream Girl' is about a man who is in love with a female with exceptional charms. If you organize the thoughts in the speaker's mind, he describes her as a "femme fatale." She attracted him sweetly "like honey," shook him "all around," and even though he knows that he "will get hurt," he can't stop loving her.

The speaker call his her "my dream girl," but in the lyrics you can clearly see that he loves her so much to the point that you don't even know what she thinks of him. This resembles dangerous love. The strong R&B beat and vocals creates a sorrowful mood more than a sweet one. Half way into the song, the guitar and piano sounds that expresses the thoughts of the speaker leaves a strong impression.

If you take out 'Dream Girl', the stories of the songs in track 1 to 5 can be associated with the category of "about last night" like the title of the movie.

To be honest, the night time, especially the summer nights, the youths become more active. In addition, at this time, there are more emotions than the opposite gender so many situations associated with the growing youth happens.

Last night, some youths might have soaked themselves in their emotions thinking about their old lovers and memories (Midnight', 'When I Miss You'), and others might have gone around trying to attract someone who they fell in love at first sight ('It's a Beautiful Night').

Some men might have gone to the club avoiding his girlfriend and got caught ('Not Me') while others might have been tied down with work worrying that his girlfriend might meet eyes with a different guy on her night out ('The Day You Rest').

BEAST's mini album is filled with song you can listen to thinking about your own past memories and it's based on situations that perhaps BEAST members might have experienced themselves.

Through these songs BEAST show that they are the regular men in their 20s who are naive, macho, clumsy, and sometimes a jerk who is willing to lie to save himself in awkward situations. They are saying that they aren't perfect men.

Listeners don't have to do anything and just listen as they pull you in. It's an album that matches well with the active men's season, summer.
